Electrical Engineer/Project Manager

Custom Engineering is a full-service MEP firm performing mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering as well as lighting, fire alarm, and low voltage system design. We are currently seeking experienced Electrical Engineers / Project Managers to join our team in Kansas City and St. Louis. We recognize people as our most valuable asset. Job Description

Our work includes projects in aviation, healthcare, municipal facilities, airports, K-12 and higher education facilities, hotels, parks, roadways, restaurants, office tenant finish, retail tenant finish, and churches, as well as core and shell design.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering required
  • Experience (10yrs+) in design of electrical systems for commercial construction
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Project Management experience required, especially managing multiple projects at once
  • Knowledge of NEC, IBC and other building codes, as well as LEED/sustainability design requirements

Primary Job Duties

  • Manage multiple projects as Project Manager; small MEP projects may have only one project manager.
  • Attend project meetings with the client.
  • Coordinate design requirements with internal MEP staff as well as other project team members.
  • Coordinate utility company service requirements.
  • Perform code research as applicable to each project.
  • Coordinate/Manage resources within the office to complete project tasks on schedule and within budget.
  • Prepare project budgets, write progress reports, and perform invoice review.
  • Perform quality control and peer reviews of project designs by others in the office.

Secondary Job Duties

  • Create a one-line diagram, estimated electrical service size and load calculations, and design narrative for the schematic design phase of projects.
  • Write and edit project construction specifications.
  • Perform NEC demand/load calculations, short circuit calculations, and voltage drop calculations.
  • Perform power, lighting, and lighting controls design tasks as needed.
  • Review O&M manuals, shop drawings, equipment submittals, perform project site observations and punch lists.

Desired Qualifications

  • AutoCAD and/or Revit drafting experience.
  • Specific experience in healthcare electrical design.
  • PE license desired and would be expected at a later date.
  • Experience with MasterSpec CSI format.
  • ETAP and AGI software knowledge desired.
  • Passed FE Exam.
  • LEED AP BD+C.

T&D Substation Engineer

This position will be a Senior level engineer, responsible for performing substation engineering services on various projects (from 69 up to 230 kV voltage levels). Prepare electrical protection and control design deliverables, and/or physical layouts for high and extra high voltage substations. Responsible for leading and directing the design of relay panels and relay/control arrangement plans, material lists, relay and control schematics, external connection diagrams and control wiring diagrams, and some minor structural engineering. Specify, evaluate, and purchase applicable equipment. Lead in training entry and guiding intermediate level electrical engineers. Develop conceptual designs, direction, consultation, and support for substation projects. Apply sound and diversified knowledge to make decisions concerning assigned projects.

Principle Job Accountabilities

  • Develop conceptual designs, direction, consultation and support for substation projects. Plan, design, and review communication and control schemes, relay panels, control wiring, and some minor structural engineering to ensure completion that is consistent with company standards and applicable codes. Include material lists, plan, elevation and detail drawings.
  • Resolve problems regarding substation design (protective relaying schemes, relay panels, and control wiring) and materials with internal and outside entities to ensure successful completion of projects within a given time frame.
  • Participate in teamwork by attending team meetings and contributing ideas. Utilize excellent written and communication skills to promote change.
  • As required, work with and coordinate consulting engineers to ensure the integrity of design, material procurement, and completion of an integrated project on schedule.
  • Plan, design, and review communication relay schemes, relay panels, control wiring, and some minor structural engineering to ensure timely completion that is cost effective and within budget guidelines. Prepare relay/control arrangement plans, material lists, relay and control schematics, external connection diagrams, and wiring diagrams.
  • Provide guidance to intermediate level electrical engineers and train entry-level electrical engineers.
  • Specify and evaluate vendor designs and quotations to ensure compliance with specifications and company purchasing guidelines to ensure cost-effectiveness over the life of the equipment.
  • Enhance the company by implementing time and cost-saving methods of completing and constructing substation projects.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Education and/or Experience
  • Professional Engineer License.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or 10 years of electrical substation experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and other engineering software required.

Physical Limitations

Must have valid motor vehicle operator's license and be capable of performing field inspections of electrical facilities, including negotiating the hazards and obstacles of typical construction sites.

  • Limited rough terrain walking.
  • Must be able to work overtime.
  • Prolonged use of computers is required.

Skills for Mechanical HVAC Engineer/Project Manager

This individual will provide project management and mechanical (HVAC) design services on a variety of building projects. Specific position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Project & Team Management as well as Technical design on assigned projects.
  2. Assist in the production of construction documents (drawings and specifications) for new buildings, and for renovations and additions to existing facilities.
  3. Create and maintain project schedules.
  4. Provide coordination of project designs with other disciplines.
  5. Maintain positive client relationships.

Position Requirements

Our ideal candidate will have a degree in Architectural or Mechanical Engineering, Professional Registration and at least 10 or more years of related MEP experience, including some project management experience. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate success in the following skills and abilities:

Qualification:

BSME or BS Architectural Engineering


CADD/BIM TECH

Great opportunity and challenge to use your Revit MEP and AutoCAD skills for the 3D drafting of mechanical and electrical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, power distribution system, generators, CCTV, fire alarm, medium voltage, roadway, and interior lighting. You will work in a fast-paced environment on various and multiple facility types including office, retail, entertainment, aviation, hospitality, education, water/wastewater, etc.

Skills

Proficient in using software programs such as Revit MEP, AutoCAD, Excel, and Word. Mechanical and Electrical design experience a plus.

Qualifications:

Either a minimum of five-plus years' experience in AutoCAD or a minimum of two years' experience in Revit MEP and 3D modeling or four plus years of Revit MEP experience and Associates Degree preferred.

  • Stable work history preferred.
  • Proficient in BIM Modeling, AutoCAD, Revit MEP.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrate drafting skills using Autodesk MEP Revit.
  • Demonstrate drafting skills using AutoCAD/Revit (2014 or newer).
  • Experience in working in team environment.
  • The ability to work to deadline and manage time effectively.
